ABOUT THE BOOK

The coronavirus pandemic revealed again the fragility of many of the supply chains and value chains that have powered globalization in recent years. Reductions in demand and mobility have led to a systematic global economic downturn which will continue for the foreseeable future. Keeping economies open during this period has required indebtedness in developed economies to an extent never previously imagined and this will tower over economic decisions for years to come. At the same time, increasing awareness of the obvious impacts of global climate change require policy-makers in both private and public sectors to consider whether it is practical to continue with expansion as the limits of productivity appear to be reached. Some societies have become to look inwards more, sometimes in the interest of sustainability but others, more sinisterly, in betraying their humanity and placing nationalism, often with a mono-ethnic dimension, at the heart of the national project. For different reasons, therefore, individuals and organizations have given more thought to reducing the pace of change (slobalization) or reversing it altogether (deglobalization). Decisions made in this light have an important part to play in international relations as countries lagging behind in economic growth because of historical colonisation rightfully claim that they are again forced to sacrifice the dreams of their people because of the misdeeds of the Global North. Is the world doomed to contraction or can solutions, especially technological solutions, be found to allow growth to continue in different ways?

This edited volume of papers will reflect the current thinking on globalization, deglobalization and slobalization at a time of imminent environmental threats from disease, debt and global climate change.

Possible subjects include but are not limited to:

  • Sustainability of regional and global value chains
  • The role of technology in overcoming productivity limits
  • Resilience of organizations at times of environmental stress
  • Government responses to threats to continued globalization
  • Continuous growth in a world of finite resources
  • Decent work in supply and value chains under stress
  • Political economy of deglobalisation
  • International relations at a time of reduced growth
  • Agriculture and food insecurity in a deglobalizing world
  • Green systems and energy
  • Redesigning jobs and work expectations
  • Marketing reduced expectations
